August 5th: World Tomistoma Day – celebrating this beautiful crocodile species.
WHAT:
Tomistoma schlegelii – the Tomistoma is a large crocodilian native to Malaysia and Indonesia.
WHY:
This is an extremely secretive species, difficult to survey, and only occasionally bred outside of it’s range. Although well-known and a popular species with folk who work with crocodiles, Tomistoma is almost unknown to the general public. It’s current conservation status is ‘Vulnerable’ – but a lot more work needs to be done to study the species.
Please help us to raise the profile of this secretive and little-known croc, and in the process, encourage and support conservation efforts for the species.
World Tomistoma Day is a conservation initiative of the Tomistoma Task Force within the IUCN-SSC Crocodile Specialist Group.
